Moodle Interface

The Moodle interface is made up of five elements. At the top of the Moodle course page is the header. The header shows your user status and provides a breadcrumb, the primary means of navigation in Moodle.

At the bottom of the Moodle course page is the footer. The footer contains a link to help you logout of your course.

The body of the Moodle page consists of three columns. The two outer columns contain blocks. Blocks contain information about your course or links to useful features of Moodle.

The middle column contains links to the materials you will use in your course. Some links will take you to documents or web pages that contain information you'll need. Other links allow you to submit an assignment, take a quiz, or post to a discussion. We'll talk more about these later.

Take a minute to look over your course page and make sure you understand the interface. It will be much easier to progress in your course if you're familar with these elements.

Navigation

The primary navigational tool in Moodle is the breadcrumb located in the header of your Moodle course page. The breadcrumb traces your movements through your course pages. Each time you select a new page, its title is added to the breadcrumb. In this way, Moodle keeps track of the pages you visit and allows you to navigate through them.

Resources and Activities

Moodle contains many resources and activities you'll use to complete tasks in your course. There are many resources and activities available in Moodle, and they're not the same in every course, but we'll discuss a few of the core resources and activities in more detail:

  • Forums
Forums offer an opportunity to communicate with your instructor and other students. In a forum, course participants discuss topics relevant to the course. You can both create new posts and comment on posts by others
  • Quizzes
Moodle provides a comprehensive quiz tool. Many types of questions like multiple choice, true/false, matching, and fill in the blank are available. Moodle grades your responses to quizzes and will return a score when you complete a quiz. Grades are stored in the Moodle gradebook available in your course.
  • Assignments
Moodle offers a variety of assignment types. You may be asked to upload a single file or multiple files or to reply to an assignment online. Your instructor will be able to grade and comment on your assignments. Your grades will be recorded in the gradebook and are available on your course page.
  • Chat
Moodle facilitates online chats among course participants. Chats may be scheduled for a particular time or available all the time.
  • Wiki
A wiki is an online document management tool that allows readers to contribute to the document. Readers may submit new material or edit existing content.
  • Text Page
Text pages contain information to help you progress in your course. These are static documents that may be printed or saved.
  • Web Page
Your Moodle course will contain links to original web pages developed for your course and to web pages on the Internet that will help expand or reinforce your learning.
